Landscape Paper Collage by Grade 5

Paper college is an art form where different types of paper, in this case handmade paper, are applied to a watercolor paper base to form a design. The paper is torn or cut into shapes to create an image. The fifth graders worked hard to come to consensus on a landscape design. After a process of submitting their designs, the class decided on some design elements which were incorporated into the final, a forest scene with a creek running through it. Step by step they worked to develop image. The larger shapes, such as rocks, trees and horizon line were worked with first. Then foliage and water were developed. Finally, the details were added. All the paper was applied using a matte, water-based glue.

Aurora Over Waldorf

This one-of-a-kind piece was created by Anchorage artist Tam Johannes. It features Anchorage Waldorf School’s prominent symbols, the aurora and mountains, and was created to celebrate its past, present, and future, as the school transition to a new school name. Tam is an award-winning, multimedia artist, whose work has shown at national exhibits. For this piece, she used Bullseye art glass; sheet glass, blown glass fractures, glass stringers, frit, and dichroic glass. The hand-cut copper sheeting was embellished and fused at high temperatures between layers of clear art glass as a design element. It was kiln fired three times (once at 1500 degrees and twice at lower temperatures) to achieve color variations in the glass and to shape the overall piece.

Imagine it in your home, either mounted on a wall or used as a functional serving tray, because as Tam says, “The best pieces of art are those that are admired and used in our daily lives.”
